The Trump administration has imposed new tariffs on imported solar panels. These tariffs will be levied over four years, and are for 30 percent in the first year, 25 percent in the second year, 20 percent in the third, and 15 percent in the fourth year.
This decision comes after the International Trade Commission recommended the imposition of tariffs, stating that American solar panel manufacturers were being harmed by cheap imports from China and South-East Asia. About 95 percent of solar panels and cells sold in the U.S. are imported from China, Malaysia, and the Philippines.
The imposition of tariffs has been opposed by a majority of the solar energy industry, who claim that tariffs would increase their costs, forcing them to raise prices for consumers, and lead to thousands of American people being laid off from their jobs.
