Tensions between China and India could potentially escalate following the formal inclusion of the ambitious ‘One Belt, One Road (OBOR)’ initiative into the constitution of China. The constitutional amendment was passed by the Communist Party of China in the recently concluded congressional meet, which occurs once in 5 years. It is the brainchild of China’s paramount leader Xi Jinping.
OBOR is an ambitious flagship project of China as it seeks to establish global hegemony in international trade. It is a global infrastructural project which features a network of economic corridors reminiscent of the historically significant Silk Road. The coverage area is primarily Asia and Europe with regions of East Africa and Oceania in the fray.
India had earlier expressed its reservations against OBOR since it passes through the disputed Pakistan-occupied Kashmir region. The controversial China-Pakistan Economic Corridor has been officially classified as being closely related to OBOR. India was an absentee in the OBOR Summit in May citing irrevocable differences with the project. OBOR is seen as a project that would promote Pakistan’s interests in PoK and expand Chinese dominance in South Asia and perhaps the world at the expense of India.
