Chipmaker Broadcom is being investigated by the Federal Trade Commission, the American body which investigates actions that might violate antitrust law, for engaging in anti-competitive practices in its negotiations with customers. The allegation is that Broadcom changed certain contracts to require customers to buy a certain percentage, rather than a certain number, of its production of items.
This investigation is likely to be given a close look, in light of Broadcom’s hostile takeover bid of chipmaker Qualcomm, which, if successful, would make the combined entity the dominant supplier of chips to be used in 1.5 billion smartphones expected to be sold around the world.
