The World Trade Organisation along with certain member states are making efforts for the adoption of a joint declaration promoting gender diversity in international trade at the upcoming Buenos Aires Ministerial meet in December.
Arachna Gonzalez, Executive Director, International Trade Centre stated “essentially, the declaration is about raising awareness about the link between trade and gender and a desire to exchange best practices on how to ensure more women participate in international trade.”
The joint declaration was initiated by the International Trade Centre (an agency of the UN and WTO) along with Sierra Leone and Iceland. It has been endorsed by 40 member states so far with several others including India providing positive reception to the idea.
The declaration mandates members to exchange ideas & solutions to enhance gender inclusivity & diversity. The declaration proposes that a report be submitted after every 2 years in order to gauge progress in the involvement of women in international trade.
